SAINTS AND SINNERS

Third Commandment's .meaning requires renewal
"Re111ember the Sabbath Day, to keep
it
holy." (Exodus
2():8
and
Deutemnomy 5: 12).
There are several possible reasons
why the Sabbath (the word means rest)
was instituted in ancient Israel.
It may have been in commemoration
of the seventh day of creation when
God rested. The Israelites probably did
nt>t think of it so much as a holiday in
remembrance of the last day of creation
as u command to "imitate God." To rest
\111 the seventh day would be to express
tit is aspect of God's nature in their own
lives .
But this commandment as it is recorded in Deuteronomy suggests that the
Sabbath was also to be a weekly thanksgivin~ lo God lor what he had done in
rescumg the Israelites from slavery in
Egypt and bringing . them to the
Promised Land.
Deuteronomy also adds a social and
humanitarian motive for keeping the
Sabb:1th . II was less perhaps that the
Israelite should rest himself than that he
should.give rest to others - the hardworked cattle. the hired hands ("thy
manservant and they maidservant") and
the "stmnger withiil they gates."
A church in Michigan exconununicates members who do not fuithfullr
attend churdt on Sunday. Harsh as II
seems. it has the effect oT restoring this
neglected commandment to an importan~:e it has unfonunately lost .
We all ought to be concerned ahcmt·

commerCialized entertainment (and
commercialism, generally) is doing to

Ui?apons inspection offer is just a stalling maneuver
Unfortunme typo In that letter to the
United Nations, wa~n't It? You know the
letter: The' one from Iraq · about how
"pleased" the ol' fulcrum of the Evil Axis
wus to·openthe country to roving t~ams uf
U.N. weapons inspectors "without conditions.'' Too had letter-writer and minister
or toreign utfuirs N;Ui Sabri dropped one
word from the text. A corrected copy,
obviously. should have read that Sabri was
pleased to inform the world and other
interested pmties that his dictator (a.k.a.
"the Government of the Republic of Iraq")
hus decided "to allow the retum of'llnited
Nations weapons inspectors to lruq without workuble conditions."
That one, sturdy word would have made
all the ditference. rcciilling the fmstmtions
of past inspections and guaranteeing the
futility of future one.~ . Even in its llbsencc,
though, ·it's hard to imagine who, besides
the Russo-Frunco-Arab bloc and Peter
Jennings, would allow themselves to be
conned into believing a dicllltor as.repressive, secretive and murder-minded as
Saddmn H11.~se in would allow anyone, let
alone unns experts, to inspect his country
"wi thuut conditions." Nonetheless,
"Without Conditions" - and without
irony ·- ha.1 been the headline of the
week.
Not that there haven't been valiant
efforts to dispel the confusion.
Headdresses olf to Ali Muhsen Hamid, the
London ambassador of the Arab League
- the very group that helped get the Iraqi
oll'er onto the Security Council table in the
tirst pluce - for suggesting that Iraqi
civilian si tes were already olf limits to
U.N. inspectors.
"We supp011 anywhere, any military
site" for inspections, Hamid explained to
the London Evening Stitndard this week,

"but not, us some people have suggested,
for inspections ·against hospituls, against
schools."
Strange how this little bombshell from a
group it\ on brokering the lmqi deal was
mutlled by most of the media. Of course,
letting Ht1111id pop off in the American
press might have too abruptly awakened
the world from its inspection fantasy which was nice while it la~ted . But even
The New York Times is now gentlr breakin£ the news, attributed to admimstratiqn
ofhcials, that Iraqi officials have already
stipulated that "some sites would be off
limits." So much for the bucolic thought of
the United Nation's 63 weapons . expens
(from 27 countries) hitting Iraq's highways and byways without a condition in
'!te world •. knaps~cks smffed with radiallon-detecuon equ1pment.
Of course, Iraq's no-strings-not position
on Iy stands to reason. I1: you were a brutal
d1ctator w1U1 dreams ot genoc1de, t111d all
the nasty toxins you needed to wage biological warfare, say, were ·being manufuclured or secreted or whatever in "hospitals" across the Fertile Crescent, would
you throw open the doors to weapons
expens who could end it all in a scathing
repon? Better to keep the e~heads busy
it1specting dummy "military' mstallutions.
And so it ~oes. You don't .have to be a
rocke! scientist. or even an anns inspector,
to ligure this one out. Everyone- France,
even - knows the Iraqi offer ."without
condition~·· will soon prove bogus; the
question 1s, when? l11e more 1mportt111t
question is: Do we have time · to wait?
Unless the U11ited States and Great Britain
ctm persuade Security Council appeasers
to sign on· on a new U.N. resolution with a
pressing timetable for Iraqi complitlllce
and a trigger for military ltction for noncompliunce, a threadbare curtain will rise

once again on the long, dn1wn-ouUnspec:
tions charade we've all seen before.
;
So far, there are no signs of a quick per·
formance . A meeting between U.N;
inspection chief Hans Blix and Iraqi ofti: ·
cials this week resulted only in the deci~
sion to meet aguin - next month:
Assuming they agree then on inspection
tenns ("without conditions," no doubt):
inspectors should anive in Iraq by the en¢
of October, although simply moving in•
according to the ·British newspaper th~
Independent, is a "process likely to take
two months." Without 11 speedy, new U.N·
resolution, inspectors won't have to repo~
,back to the Security Councillor ·60 mor&
days, at which point they would have silt
months just to reach "prelhnin&ry conclui
sionf- sometime in August 2003.
So, when diplomats tell TI1c New York
limes that "Iraq's gesture to receive the
weapons inspectors could slow the pace oC
events even more than Washington h:~
intended," they aren 't kidding. But can we
afford just to ctmckle and ·wuit'l While the
world was transfixed by the chimera of
unfettered access to Iraqi lalioratories this
week, the London Telegraph wa~ report·
ing on signs "that Saddam may bli
embarking on the opposite course of
action." These include not only a surge iJl .
illicit arms trafticking with former Soviet
states, the paper wrote, but also indications
that Iraq is bargaining with North Korea
over stocks of plutonium. With such mate.
rial, British nuclear eKperts believe lr.tq
could create a nuclear weapon "withiq
months." .
•
Surely, that's nothing worth waiting for:
