neighbor, Nance said, who received
a laceration to the foot, but was not
transported to the hospital by the
EMS.
According to Nance, the Mason
County EMS was first on the scene,
and advised there was a working fire.
He said the EMS also reported there
were multiple burn patients outside,
and multiple helicopters would be
needed. A landing zone was set up at
Wahama High School.
When firefighters arrived, Nance
said they found heavy fire. Crews
made entry into the rear of the house,
but were unsuccessful reaching the
fire due to deteriorating conditions,
he said.
Firemen then entered the front
door and found heavy fire conditions.
According to Nance, the crew had to
leave the inside of the house because
the floor and roof began to collapse.
The firemen continued fighting the

blaze from the outside until conditions improved. They returned into
the house to put out the fire and to
look for the three family pets, which
perished, Nance said.
Due to the state protocol of a fire
with injuries, the state fire marshal’s
office was called in, Nance said. Assistant State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic
said Friday morning that the cause of
the fire is undetermined, but he does
not suspect foul play.
Assisting the Mason fire department at the scene were the New
Haven, Pomeroy, and Middleport fire
departments, Mason County EMS,
Mason County Sheriff’s Department,
Mason County Homeland Security
and Emergency Management, Healthnet Aeromedical, Medflight, and the
West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s
Office. Walmart of Mason donated
water and ice to the firefighters, while
the fire department auxiliary provided
food following the blaze.

Cowboys unsure
of QB for West
Virginia game
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — With Spencer
Sanders’ status unclear for Saturday’s game
against West Virginia, it is uncertain who will be
at quarterback for No. 15 Oklahoma State in the
Big 12 opener for both schools.
Will Sanders’ right foot injury, which caused him
to leave the Cowboys’ season-opening 16-7 victory
over Tulsa last week late in the first quarter, be
healed enough for him to play? Will coach Mike
Gundy start true freshman Shane Illingworth, who
completed 4-of-5 passes for 74 yards to help lead
the comeback victory in the fourth quarter?
Or will Ethan Bullock, a junior college transfer
from the City College of San Francisco, get the
start for Oklahoma State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) after
completing 8-of-13 passes for just 41 yards and an
interception in about two quarters?
“We haven’t got that far yet,” Gundy said Monday. “We’ve got three guys available and we’ll have
to make that decision based on practice reps.”
Sanders’ right foot was placed in a boot over
the weekend. It will be a game-time decision on
whether he starts.
West Virginia (1-0, 0-0), coming off a bye week
that followed a season-opening 56-10 victory over
Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 12, is going to be ready
for whoever is at quarterback.
“I know (Sanders) is questionable for the game,
but we are preparing as if he will play,” Mountaineers coach Neal Brown said. “I think that’s how we
have to go about it, and we’ll adjust if he doesn’t.”
Five things to watch on Saturday:
Ground game, Part I
The quarterback situation for the Cowboys will
affect the running game, as it did last week after
Sanders’ injury. The defense can take steps to try
to minimize star running back Chuba Hubbard if
they don’t have to worry as much about the pass.
Hubbard, who led the nation in rushing last year
with 2,094 yards (and was third with 21 touchdowns), wound up with 93 yards on 27 carries
last week, including the winning touchdown in the
fourth quarter, ending his 11-game streak of rushing for 100-plus yards. His contribution will be
crucial Saturday, no matter who is at QB.

NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Sometimes you just run into a team
that’s rolling.
The Meigs volleyball team
dropped a straight game decision
to Tri-Valley Conference Ohio
Division host Nelsonville-York on
Thursday in Athens County, giving
the Lady Buckeyes eight wins in a
row.
Nelsonville-York (12-2, 6-1 TVC
Ohio) led wire-to-wire en route to
a 25-10 win in the opening game.
NYHS scored 11 in a row to
start the second game, but Meigs

(4-6, 2-5) claimed the next seven
markers. MHS battled back to
within two points, at 18-16, but
eventually fell 25-20 in Game 2.
The hosts scored the first four
points of the third game and never
looked back, capping off the 3-0
sweep with a wire-to-wire 25-14
win.
Leading the Maroon and Gold,
Kylee Mitch and Andrea Mahr
both had six service points, with
two aces from Mitch and one from
Mahr. Mallory Hawley, Mallory
Adams and Hannah Durst finished
with three points apiece, with an
ace apiece by Adams and Durst,
while Baylee Tracy came up with

two markers in the setback.
Durst and Hawley led Meigs
at the net with 10 and nine kills
respectively. Katie Hawkins came
up with four kills for the guests,

Marauders in their season opener
on Sept. 1 in Rocksprings.

for 455 yards and four touchdowns last season,
will play after sitting out against Eastern Kentucky. The other players suspended, all backups,
will be available, too. “I think there’s some anticipation, because Junior hasn’t played in a game,
Chase hasn’t played in a game, but they’ve practiced really well,” Brown said.
Facing former team
A graduate transfer from West Virginia, Oklahoma State’s starting left guard Jeff Sills will
face his former team Saturday. Sills played in 27
games, starting 24, for the Mountaineers, including the first two last year before a season-ending
injury. He was part of a Cowboy offensive line that
allowed six sacks last week, four against Bullock.
“Josh has been really good for us, he’s come in and
competed,” Gundy said. “He’s a good leader, he’s
a great person, so we’re certainly glad that he’s on
our team.”
Ground game, Part II
Yes, it was Eastern Kentucky, but West Virginia
enjoyed an outstanding day rushing in its opener.
Leddie Brown gained a career-high 123 yards,
along with two touchdowns, on just 10 carries
in the first half, while also hauling in a 15-yard
pass for a score. His backup, Alec Sinkfield, also
established career bests with 15 carries and 123
yards, while also scoring two touchdowns. Overall,
the Mountaineers gained 329 yards on the ground
with five touchdowns. “Offensively, we ran the ball
better than at any point last year,” Brown said.
Department of defense
Oklahoma State’s defense was impressive in its
opener. The Cowboys allowed just 278 yards on 59
plays and limited Tulsa to 0-for-12 on third down
conversions. “The defense was fabulous,” Gundy
said. “Zero-for-12 on third down and one-for-four
on fourth down is really the story of the game.”

Limit of 1 ballot box per county reaches Ohio appeals court

Judge Susan Brown
said the court will make a
decision soon in the expedited case.
Colombo argued that
Republican Secretary of

said the law governing
drop boxes was unclear

and that he then asked

rescinded it.
The order then came

with LaRose noting county election boards needed

Section 307.981 of the Ohio Revised Code authorizes the
Board of Commissioners of Gallia County, (Commissioners),
to designate any private or government entity within the State
of Ohio to serve as a public children services agency.
For many years, the Gallia County Children Services Boards
(CSB) was designated that responsibility. CSB Resolution
#2020-02 dated April 20, 2020 stated the CSB's intent to
dissolve and relinquish said designation requiring the
Commissioners to designate a new agency to serve as a
public children services agency. After careful consideration,
on August 20, 2020, the Commissioners approved, by resolution, to designated Gallia County Department of Job and
Family Services to serve as the public children services
agency effective December 1, 2020.
