Cross Words: Walk by faith, not by sight
In this season of viruses and political instability, I find myself thinking
a lot about eternity. This
world is not my home.
And it can be hard for
a young man like me to
really embrace. After all, I
look forward to what God
has in store for me on
this earth. Even still, at
the end of the day, I know
I’m not home yet.
In October of 1950,
“The Lion, the Witch,
and the Wardrobe” by
C.S. Lewis was published. It’s one of my
favorite stories. As Lucy
and her three siblings
enter Narnia, everything
changes. They fall in
love with Aslan who is
known for his protection
and sovereignty in the
Narnian world. Having
fallen in love with Narnia,
the Pevensie children
are enamored by a world
far beyond their wildest
dreams.
One of the reasons
why this book remains so
popular 70 years later is
because of Lewis’s ability
to capture us in Narnia.
Even those who reject
Christ find themselves
drawn here. Neil Gaiman,
a secular author, writes,
“The weird things about
the Narnia books for me
was that mostly they
seemed true. These were
reports from a real place.”
Indeed, my favorite

We received some

one sign that sticks out
to me. It says, “This
home runs on faith.” And
that sign hangs in our
soon-to-be living room.
Why? Not because it’s
creative or cute (even
though it is). Rather,
the sign hangs where
it does because it says
something we believe.
That, through every up

by faith. In good times
and bad times, we walk
by faith.
As I close, I want to

Don’t forget God’s

Saratoga, New York, in a
turning point of the Revolutionary War.
In 1814, the London
Beer Flood inundated
the St. Giles district of
the British capital as vats
of beer ruptured, sending more than 320,000
gallons of liquid into the
streets; up to nine people
were reported killed.
In 1931, mobster Al
Capone was convicted in
Chicago of income tax
evasion. (Sentenced to 11
years in prison, Capone
was released in 1939.)
In 1939, Frank Capra’s

comedy-drama “Mr.
Smith Goes to Washington,” starring James
Stewart as an idealistic
junior U.S. senator,
had its premiere in the
nation’s capital.
In 1967, Puyi (pooyee), the last emperor of
China, died in Beijing at
age 61.
In 1979, Mother Teresa
of India was awarded the

In 2018, residents of
the Florida Panhandle

earlier returned home to
find homes, businesses

killed at least 59 people
and caused more than
$25 billion in damage
in Florida, Georgia, the
Carolinas and Virginia.
Ten years ago: Pope
Benedict XVI gave Australia its first saint, canonizing Mary MacKillop,
a 19th century nun who
was briefly excommunicated in part because
her religious order had

Five years ago: Thousands of migrants seeking
a better life in Western
Europe surged into Slovenia using a new route
after Hungary sealed its

The U.S. ambassador

The men in the arena
Deputy honored with
Blue Heart Medal
By Beth Sergent
bsergent@aimmediamidwest.com

POINT PLEASANT,
W.Va. — Sometimes,
though not every time,
the man in the arena
lives to walk out of it and
return another day.
Last December, Deputy
Matt McCormick with
the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, was
on a call that ended in
gunfire, with McCormick
being injured in the line
of duty.
McCormick eventually
ended up at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va. for treatment
of an injury to his left eye
and the surrounding area
on his face. Surgeries followed and he supposed,
in all, he was out for a
total of three months
before returning to active
duty, full time.
Shortly after McCormick was injured, Chief
Deputy Dave Downing
contacted the organization that awards the Blue
Heart Medal. During a
ceremony earlier this
month, Downing, along
with Sheriff Greg Powers, presented the young
deputy with the honor.
“The Blue Heart Medal
is the first national medal
to be awarded to law
enforcement officers
who are either seriously
wounded or killed in the
line of duty, it’s similar to
the Purple Heart Medal
awarded to military
personnel,” Powers said
to those gathered at the
ceremony held inside the
third floor courtroom at
the Mason County Courthouse.
Powers said former
President Theodore Roosevelt was on the medal,
noting prior to becoming
president, he was the
New York City Police
Commissioner.
In 1910, Roosevelt is
credited with delivering
the speech known as
“The Man in the Arena.”
“Though it was written
in 1910, it seems fitting
for today when police officers are being criticized
and attacked daily,” Powers said.
The sheriff read portions of the famous
speech, looking out at
officers with his department seated in the benches, ending his remarks
with, “…‘no statue has
ever been erected in
honor of a critic. If you
want to win, you have to
show up, be vulnerable
and be the man in the
arena’ …which is what
you guys are.”
Chief Deputy Downing
then presented McCormick with the Blue Heart
Medal, which includes a
medal for the lapel, neck,
a challenge coin and a
pin.
Powers then told those
gathered that each time
McCormick calls him,
he has a habit of saying,
“Hey sir, how are you?”
Powers said the morning
the deputy was injured,
he looked down at his cell
phone to see McCormick
phoning him, likely from
the ambulance. Powers
obviously took the call
and was greeted with that
same “Hey sir, how are
you?”
McCormick recalled
he apologized to Powers,

The Blue Heart Medal is the first national medal to be awarded
to law enforcement officers who are either seriously wounded
or killed in the line of duty. On the medal is the face of former
President Theodore Roosevelt.

saying, “You weren’t the
first call I made, I actually
called my mom first so
she could get hold of my
fiancée…he (the sheriff)
said ‘that was fine.’”
Powers said it was the
first time that morning
where he felt like he could
take a breath.
Following the medal
presentation, McCormick, who was hired by
the sheriff’s department
in 2018 and had previously worked at the Point
Pleasant Police Department, was asked if he
ever doubted returning to
law enforcement?
“There was some doubt
whether I could do it or
not,” McCormick said
about the time shortly
after being injured, when
he was laying in a hospital bed, facing his recovery. “…I’m going to try to
do it (the job) as long as I
can do it.”
“He adapted really,
really well,” McCormick’s
fiancée Hope Henry said
in regards to his recovery
and return to active duty.
“He had his uniform laid

out for the next day when
he went back to work,
so I’d say he was pretty
excited to go back…like
the first day of school.”
The young couple was
asked if life had changed
for them in regards to
how they deal with the
risk law enforcement officers face, daily.
“To be honest, it’s not
that different,” Henry
said about their lives after
the injury. “I mean, I trust
him to always be careful
and be safe. I obviously
can’t control everyone
else…”
“The worry has always
been there,” McCormick
said about the couple continuing to live their lives
despite what they cannot
control.
As Sheriff Powers pointed out in his
remarks, these days,
many law enforcement
officers are facing a hostile environment from
some, who are part of
the all of the public, they
have sworn to protect.
When asked about
this, and what he wanted

people to take away from
his experience with his
brothers in blue, McCormick said, “We’re not bad
people…honestly, I try to
treat everything the same,
every call’s got its worth.
People are out there hurting. Yeah, they (some
people) can be mad at us
if they want, that’s their
choice, they have the

right to do it, I’ll protect
them nonetheless. If I
want them to take away
anything (from my experience), we’re still human,
they hurt, we hurt. We
go on calls to save their
lives. I mean, I needed
the cops just as much as
anyone else to save my
life that night.”
Also participating in

the ceremony was Department Chaplain Jonathan
Pinson and the Mason
County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard which
presented the colors.

The massive amount
of voting has occurred
without any of the violent
skirmishes at polling places
that some activists and
law enforcement officials
feared. It has featured highprofile errors — 100,000
faulty mail ballots sent

in Columbus, Ohio, and a

and Pennsylvania blaming
delays in sending ballots on
overwhelming demand. But
there’s little evidence of the
mass disruption that some
feared as election offices had
to abruptly shift to deal with
the influx of early voting.
But there have been
extraordinary lines and
hourslong wait times in
Georgia, Texas and North
Carolina as they’ve opened
in-person early voting. The
delays were largely a result
of insufficient resources to
handle the surge, something
advocates contend is a form
of voter suppression.
Republicans argue that
these signs of enthusiasm are
meaningless — Democratic
early voters are people who
would have voted anyway,
they say. But an AP analysis
of the early vote shows 8% of
early voters had never cast
a ballot before, and 13.8%
had voted in half or fewer of
previous elections for which
they were eligible.
The data also show voters
embracing mail voting,
which health officials say
is the safest way to avoid
coronavirus infection while
voting. Of the early voters,
82% cast ballots through
the mail and 18% in person.
Black voters cast 10% of the
ballots cast, about the same
as their share of the national
electorate, according to the
AP analysis of data from L2,
a political data firm. That’s a
sign that those voters, who
have been less likely to vote
by mail than white people
and Latinos, have warmed to
the method.

Golden Bears

volleyball
By Randy Payton
For Ohio Valley Publishing

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio
Grande’s night began with a blown lead in the
opening set.
It ended with a blown lead that short-circuited
what would’ve been a dramatic comeback.
West Virginia University-Tech scored the final
four points of the fifth and deciding set to post
a 3-2 (27-25, 26-24, 24-26, 10-25, 16-14) victory
over the RedStorm, Tuesday night, in River States
Conference volleyball action at the Newt Oliver
Arena.
The Golden Bears improved to 3-3 overall and
3-3 in the RSC with the victory.
Rio Grande fell to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play as a result of the loss.
The RedStorm got off to a blistering start in set
one by opening up a 24-14 advantage, but WVUTech roared to life and scored 13 of the next 14
points to grab an early match lead.
The Golden Bears kept things going in the second stanza as well, finishing on a 13-6 run to erase
an 18-13 deficit and take a commanding edge in
the match.
Tech looked as if it would make quick work of
its host by bolting to a 15-9 lead in set three, but
Rio began the road back with a 17-9 spurt to finish
the period and force a fourth set. The RedStorm
scored the final three points of the set, the first
of which came after the game officials reversed
their original call of a kill by Tech’s Brooklyn Cook
which would’ve produced a 25-23 win for the
Bears.
Rio Grande parlayed its new-found momentum
into an easy set four win, jumping to a 15-4 advantage and leading by as many as 15 points twice in
the period.
The RedStorm also scored six of the first of
seven points in the final set, but Tech responded
with an 8-3 run of its own and forged a 9-9 tie on
the third of three straight blocks.
Rio eventually moved to within a point of finishing off the comeback after an attack error by
Tech’s Ana Alonso Olea made it 14-12, but the
Bears scored the final four winners - the last of
two of which were Rio attack errors - to survive
and get the win.
Katelyn Byrd and Ana Muniz Rocandio finished

Same old Browns?
Cleveland can quiet
critics in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The trappings of
a rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers
and Cleveland Browns have lingered even
as the results have grown remarkably onesided.
Bad blood. Trash talk. Emotionally
charged games. The only thing the longrunning series has lacked for the better part
of a quarter century returns Sunday when
the unbeaten Steelers (4-0) host the surging
Browns (4-1).
Actual stakes.
Pittsburgh is off to its best start in 41
years, but has gotten there by beating
teams with a combined record of 3-15-1.
The Browns haven’t been this good a month
into the season since Bill Belichick was
roaming the sidelines in something other
than a hoodie with the sleeves cut off.
Yes, this is different. So different that
Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett’s
first visit to Pittsburgh since he ripped
off Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s
helmet and swung it at him last November
is not a major part of the narrative but
simply outside “noise” both sides intend to
tune out.
“What transpired doesn’t really matter
to me,” Steelers defensive tackle Cam
Heyward said.
The same goes in Cleveland. There’s
simply too much on the line.

Section 307.981 of the Ohio Revised Code authorizes the
Board of Commissioners of Gallia County, (Commissioners),
to designate any private or government entity within the State
of Ohio to serve as a public children services agency.
For many years, the Gallia County Children Services Boards
(CSB) was designated that responsibility. CSB Resolution
#2020-02 dated April 20, 2020 stated the CSB's intent to
dissolve and relinquish said designation requiring the
Commissioners to designate a new agency to serve as a
public children services agency. After careful consideration,
on August 20, 2020, the Commissioners approved, by resolution, to designated Gallia County Department of Job and
Family Services to serve as the public children services
agency effective December 1, 2020.
