Vice President AI Gore
badly trails Texas Gov. George

policy propPsals.
Whereas Bush -- and also
Gore's Democratic rival, former Sen. Bill Bradley (N.J.) -won't start detailing their policy pPsitioits until the fall, Gore. already has
unleashed an avalanche of them .
He's received precious little political credit.for
it, but since announcing his candidacy in June,
Gore has given major speech~s .on crime, economic innovation, edutation, the environment,
family life and "sustainable growth" -- all chock
full of new ideas.
·
Among other things, Gore wants to overhaul
the nation's crimina) justice system to ensure
swifter trials, provide preschool to every child,
create tax-free savings accounls for college
tuition and job training and double the nation's
investment in informalion-technology and cancer
research.
He also wants to increase jail time for committing a v.iolent crime in front of a child, amend the
Constitution to enhance the rights of crime victims, expand the tax credit for corp<>rate research
and developmen~ encourage poor people to build .
their own homes, redevelop decrepit urban sites to
ease suburban sprawl and help families spend
more time'together.
Gore's ideas come so thick and fast, in fact,
that they need 1o be crystallized into a simpler
overall message that sticks in the public's mind.
This is one job awaiting top campaign strategist
Carter Eskew when he comes aboard Aug. 1.
But Gore aides say that the blizzard or policy
initiatives unleashed so far has helped demonstrate that Gore does not inlend to be a mere

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eddie
Taub<:nsee is familiar with what Jeff
Shaw throws because of all the time
he spent catching him with the
-tincinnati Reds .
T~ubensee came up as a pinch-hit·

and caught up with a 2-0 pitch from
the Los Angeles Dodgers' closer. driving in two runs to tie the score and
"set up Cincinnati's 5-3 win in 10
innings.
"Ev~ n though I know what he 's
got, he's still one of the best relievers
in the game;'' Taubensee said. " I
. don 't know . if it helps that I've
caught him ,_but l was able to get a
pitch I could handle.'.'
.
Dmitri Young led off the lOth
with a double off'Shaw (3-2) for his
third straight hit. He advanced to
, third on an infield single by Greg

vaughn and scored on Barry Larkin's
sacrifice ny to center. Aaron Boone
followed with an RBI si ngle.
Cincinnati's victory put the Reds
a season- high 15 games over .500
and improved tbe major league's best
road mark to 32-14. They remain two
games behind Houston in the NL
Central. following their six th victory
in games they've trailed after eight
innings.

"That's why we're still sticking in
thi s race. and were going to have to

it," Taubensee said. "'The la.•t couple
of months thi s team has been showing a lot ·Of character, and it's pretty

Dear Ann Landen: I am facing
a vexing issue, and I hope you can
help me figure out what to do.
I have three sons. all in their 30's.
Five years ago, I gave each son a
sizeable and equal sum. to invest in .
his future.
They did not ask me for this
money. I offered it, hoping . they I
would put it to good ·use. Later; I
lent more than $100,000 to my only ,
unmarried son, "Dennis," because
he wanted to buy a foreclosed house
for resale.
' ·
Dennis and J had a verbal contract ~greeing that the rental income
would be used to pay back the
money I was shelling out for property taxes. ·i~surance, .repairs, and so
on. Dennis has fulfilled that part o(
the cont~acl.
