After appearing
in the Meigs County

found guilty of one
felony count of improperly handling a firearm
in a motor vehicle

Ukraine says
it foiled 2nd
cyberattack
KIEV, Ukraine (AP)
— Ukraine has dodged
a second cyberattack,
officials said Wednesday, suggesting that the
digital campaign which
paralyzed computers
across the country and
around the world is still
ongoing.
Ukraine is still trying to find its feet after
scores or even hundreds
of businesses and government agencies were
hit by an explosion of
data-scrambling software
on June 27. In a Facebook post , Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said
there was a second stage
to that attack, timed to
hit its peak at 4 p.m. in
Ukraine on July 4.
Avakov said the second strike — like the
first one — originated
from servers at the
Ukrainian tax software
company M.E. Doc,
which sheds a little
more light on Tuesday’s
heavily armed raid on
M.E. Doc’s office and
the seizure of its servers. Video released
Wednesday showed men
in camouflage carrying
assault-style weapons
storming the company’s
modest offices in Kiev
as office workers calmly
watched them. Police
spokeswoman Yulia
Kvitko said there were
no arrests.
“We prevented the
initiation of the second
wave of viruses,” Yaroslav Trakalo, another
police spokesman, said
in the video released
Wednesday. He said
investigators have
already found “evidence
of Russian presence on
these servers,” although
he did not elaborate.
Ukraine has blamed
the Kremlin for the

attacked that sowed
chaos. Kremlin officials
routinely deny claims of
electronic interference in
Ukraine and elsewhere.
The raid on M.E. Doc
caps a week of increasingly implausible claims
from the company that
it was not at the heart
of the outbreak. On
Wednesday the firm
reversed itself, acknowledging that it had been
broken into and used by
hackers to seed the malware epidemic.
It’s not clear what the
thrust or scope of the
second cyberattack in
Ukraine was, but M.E.
Doc is widely used
across Ukraine, making
it a tempting springboard for hackers. An
executive at the company was quoted by Interfax-Ukraine as saying the
software was installed
on 1 million machines
across the country.
How many of those
machines have been
infected is an open question.
The June 27 attack
initially seemed to be a
particularly aggressive
form of ransomware,
but many analysts who
picked it apart later
said it appeared to be a
thinly disguised attempt
to destroy data and sow
chaos. Some said the
malware epidemic was
likely state-backed, and
Ukrainian officials have
squarely put the blame
on the Kremlin.
In the meantime, the
online wallet carrying
roughly $10,000 worth
of digital currency
extorted by the cyber
attackers was emptied
shortly around the time
of the July 4 raid, according to Bitcoin’s public
ledger.

of spontaneously loosening the grip on the reins
and letting our intuition
veer off course a bit. The
trip becomes like the
blurry fields and buildings on a normal ride to
work every day.
I’m not suggesting we
all just let go of those
reigns. That would be dangerous and there’s enough
reckless driver’s out there,
but I am advocating loosening the reigns enough
to permit adventure and
intrigue to find us.
I’d considered going to
Myrtle Beach after leaving Gabe’s since he lives
only a few hours away
from there, but the beach
wasn’t calling me. The
monks were. I ended up
at a monastery retreat
which was booked when
I checked last week, but
with a last-minute cancellation, I recognized my
blessing, loosened the
expectation to stroll the
beach just because the
multitudes felt the need
to, and trotted into Mepkin Abbey.
This summer as you
head out on vacation,
don’t forget to take
the road less traveled
every now and then and
explore along the way.
Happy trails!

2017 Gallia County football schedules set
By Paul Boggs
pboggs@aimmediamidwest.com

The Raiders return
their core and appear
primed for another
strong season, while
South Gallia and Gallia
Academy aim to improve
under new head coaches.
So goes the narratives for the three Gallia
County football teams, as
the 2017 season schedules have been officially
announced.
Last season, River
Valley — after its only
state playoff appearance
in school history — went
6-4, losing to three clubs
which placed ninth or
better in each of their
respective regions.
It did suffer a disappointing defeat at Meigs
midway through the year,
and finished an even 3-3
in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division.
South Gallia — after
its fourth-ever state playoff appearance two years
ago — slipped to 3-7,
playing primarily underclassmen and with the
double-wing double-tight
end run-oriented offense.
Gallia Academy, unfortunately, ended up 1-9 for
the second consecutive
season — defeating only
South Point 40-24 in the
season finale in a battle
of 0-9 teams.
For River Valley, the
Raiders will play the
exact same rotation of a
year ago —opening the
season at Eastern (Aug.
25) before hosting Gallia

Academy (Sept. 2) and
South Point (Sept. 8)
prior to starting its TVC
Ohio action.
The Raiders will end
the regular season with
a fourth non-league
encounter — at Waverly
on Oct. 27.
That contest is set for
a 7 p.m. kickoff — with
all other affairs set for
7:30 p.m. starts.
The Gallia Academy
matchup is River Valley’s
only Saturday game.
In the TVC Ohio, the
Silver and Black will
host Meigs (Sept. 22),
Alexander (Oct. 6) and
Athens (Oct. 20), while
traveling to NelsonvilleYork (Sept. 15), Wellston
(Sept. 29) and Vinton
County (Oct. 13).
South Gallia, under
new head coach Mike
Smith, also faces the
exact same schedule —
including hosting Sciotoville East in the season
opener (Aug. 25).
The Rebels also host
Manchester for their only
other non-conference
clash —which is set for
Friday, Sept. 15.
Speaking of Manchester, that 40-0 shutout
was one of only three
victories for the Red
and Gold, which also
defeated Federal Hocking (42-24) and Wahama
(28-20).
Their TVC Hocking road dates include
Trimble (Sept. 8), Belpre
(Sept. 29), Waterford
(Oct. 6) and Miller (Oct.
27), while home games

Division football game.

feature Federal Hocking
(Sept. 1), Eastern (Sept.
22), Wahama (Oct. 13)
and Southern (Oct. 20).
The only 7 p.m. kickoff for South Gallia is
at Waterford, although
the Federal Hocking
kick time has yet to be
announced.
The Rebels will also
host River Valley for
their annual Ohio High
School Athletic Association Jamboree preseason

bout at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.
Gallia Academy is also
forging ahead with a new
mentor — former Blue
Devil assistant coach and
Gallia County resident
Alex Penrod.
The Blue Devils open
at both Meigs (Aug. 25)
and River Valley (Sept.
2), before renewing their
now non-league rivalry

GENEVA (AP) — Los
Angeles and Paris have
been praised by an International Olympic Committee panel for having
“outstanding” plans to
host the 2024 Summer
Games.
Storytelling skills and
cutting-edge technologies from LA, plus “stunning backdrops” in Paris
where the modern Olympics was reborn, were
anticipated eagerly by
an IOC evaluation commission which assessed
the bidders in a 180-page
dossier and 15-minute
video published Wednesday.
“Their candidatures
have put the Olympic
Movement in a win-win
situation, with very
little to separate the two
projects,” said Patrick
Baumann, the panel
chairman and an IOC
member.
Both cities should get
hosting rights for the
2024 or 2028 Olympics
on Sept. 13, at the IOC’s

annual meeting being
held in Lima, Peru. Paris
is viewed as favorite for
2024.
The evaluation was
prepared for IOC members who will meet
bid leaders at a key
campaign event on July
11-12 in Lausanne.
Members are also now
expected to ratify the
proposal for a double
hosting award, which the
IOC executive board formally made last month.
Challenges highlighted
for the two cities include
public transport and traffic management plans in
Los Angeles, and new
laws needed to guarantee the Paris project
which the IOC wants to
review in advance.
LA scored better than
Paris in the IOC’s own
polling of public support
for hosting the Summer
Games.

candidates’ plans affect

85 IOC members eligible

Still, Los Angeles and
Paris have long been
viewed as high-class,
low-risk options. The
IOC has seemed grateful
to have them after years
of spiraling spending and
cost overruns by host
cities, and public opposition that ended other
bids.
IOC President Thomas
Bach has pushed for
a double award since
December, aiming to
seize the chance of

Seeking to avoid
construction costs and
creating white elephant

praised for proposing to
use existing and temporary arenas for 97 and
93 percent, respectively,
of their Summer Games’

Plans for an athletes’

potentially key difference
between the bids.
LA proposes to use
existing student accommodation at UCLA
described by Baumann’s
team as “outstanding in
all aspects.”
The Paris plan to
build a $1.45 billion village near the Stade de

as the riskiest project in
either bid.
However, the IOC
