Syracuse
Council
discusses
mosquito
issues
Poole appointed

was positive from members and outlined possible future plans.
“From our meeting place we just
fanned out and picked things to work
on. Everyone made an impact wherever they went,” said Cleek.
“It was noticeable,” she continued,
“we are going to pick and focus on
something next time, get everyone
working on one thing together, but
the first meeting went great.”
CAG representatives present in the
meeting joked they were open to a
name change if ‘Community Action’
sounded too aggressive or the acronym CAG seemed uninviting.
“No, I think ‘action’ is good,”
emphasized Mayor Don Anderson,

SYRACUSE — Syracuse Council mounted
mosquito defense, convened with water board
members, delivered a
final report on London
Pool, and discussed legal
concerns related to the
discontinued walking
path in regular session
on Thursday.
Council also took
action to fill the seat
vacated by the resignation of council member
Scott Wolfe. The Aug.
10 meeting also saw the
final reading and adoption of a measure that
allows the fire department to bill for accident
scene towing, a cost
typically absorbed by
insurance companies.
Based on recent testing by the Meigs County
Department of Health,
Mayor Eric Cunningham moved forward
with plans to dig out a
nameless creek between
London Pool and Marina
Drive.
The Meigs County
Health Department
detected West Nile virus
in samples taken from
the village, and Cunningham said the creek
digging came at the
recommendation of the
health officials.
As Cunningham discussed with council,
“We’ve intended to dig
out that area but it’s
been too wet” to accomplish with regular tools
and labor — council
approved the expense
for larger equipment to
immediately remove the
standing water and free
up the creek flow.
Cunningham said the
health department is
working with the village
to identify any other
locations and treatments, if needed.
Board of Public Affairs
(BPA) members Gordon
Winebrenner and Al
Graham sought approval
to pursue grants for
water line replacement
on sections of Rt. 164.
“Both of these projects
are really needed,” said
Grants Administrator
Fred Hoffman, and discussion noted the area
had frequent issues over
several decades.
BPA President Winebrenner said, “The
water board and council
want to work together,
and get an estimate of
replacement costs,” a
difficult task given the
Village’s tight financial
situation.
Modernization projects might incur debt
that is then passed on to
consumers, Graham told
council. “We’re trying
to keep the water bills

Woodside,
Toledo
threaten to
take back
the MAC
COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — With the MidAmerican Conference’s
marquee quarterback,
Toledo might be ready
to capture some the
magic that earned
Western Michigan a
piece of the national
spotlight last season.
Hunting their first
MAC championship since 2004, the
Rockets have plenty
of returning talent.
Fifteen starters are
back from last year’s
9-4 team, including
4,000-yard passer
Logan Woodside and
his top receiver, Cody
Thompson. Woodside’s
45 touchdown passes
last season was tops in
the nation.
Woodside’s road has
not been particularly
smooth. He played in
the shadow of Alabama
transfer Phillip Ely and
even redshirted his
junior season in 2015.
“He’s set himself up
to be a fifth year senior
and have some real
success,” Toledo coach
Jason Candle said. “It’s
been a tough road for
him in his career, a
guy we’ve had to tell
twice he wasn’t going
to be the quarterback,
that he’s been beaten
out for the job. A lot
of guys would have
bagged it and left and
went other places, so it
speaks to his resiliency
and his resolve.”
The team expects a
championship.
“When I came here
in 2013, I had a vision
to become the best
quarterback in the
country,” Woodside
said. “I also had a
vision to lead my team
to a MAC championship. (Former Toledo
QB) Bruce Gradkowski
always gives me a hard
time, (saying) you’re
not the best quarterback at Toledo until
you win a MAC championship. We’re going
to work extremely
hard. If we don’t win
a MAC championship,
it will be devastation
to us.”
Western Michigan
will have something to
say about that, despite
being without coach
P.J. Fleck, now at Minnesota, and last season’s starting quarterback and leading wide
receiver. The Broncos
will have to row the
boat even faster to
match the 13-1 record
and the final No. 15
ranking in the AP Top
25.

Vinton County was the host

Vinton County carded a team

The top four scores counted

Westfall was the only club to

The Mustangs’ Ella Seely

Justin Thomas poses with the Wanamaker
Trophy after winning the PGA Championship golf
tournament at the Quail Hollow Club Sunday in
Charlotte, N.C.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The son
and grandson of golf professionals, Justin
Thomas couldn’t think of a better major
to win than the PGA Championship.
And at age 24, he couldn’t think of a
better time.
Youth is taking over the highest level
of golf, and there were times Thomas felt
left behind. Rory McIlroy already had four
majors when he was 25. Closer to home
was Jordan Spieth, a close friend since
they were 14. Spieth won his third major
at the British Open last month to give
him three legs of the career Grand Slam.
“Frustration probably isn’t the right
word,” Thomas said. “Jealously definitely is. I wanted to be doing that, and I
wasn’t.”
Sunday at Quail Hollow was his
moment.
Starting the final round two shots out
of the lead, Thomas closed with a 3-under
68 for a two-shot victory to capture the
final major of the year.
It required a little bit of good fortune,
like when his tee shot bounced out of

a tree and into the fairway on the par-5
10th hole, which ended with his 8-foot
putt teetering on the edge of the cup for
12 seconds before gravity finally took
over and the ball dropped for birdie.
“I didn’t even see it go in,” said Thomas, who had his back turned to the cup as
he was asking caddie Jimmy Johnson how
it didn’t go in. Players are allowed reasonable time to get to the ball, and then they
get 10 seconds before they hit the next
shot, so he was well within the limit.
He seized control on the back nine with
a chip-in for birdie from 40 feet on the
par-3 13th hole.
Above all, it required plenty of grit, and
Thomas showed plenty of that.
The key moment in his victory came
along the infamous “Green Mile” at Quail
Hollow, a brutal stretch of holes where
players are trying to hang on with pars.
Thomas had a one-shot lead over Hideki
Matsuyama when he drove into the
rough, and his approach tumbled into a
bunker. He did well to get that out to 6
feet.
