The theme for that day’s

Class themes were based on
songs made popular by the

which continue to be considered classics.
In particular, the theme
salutes Meigs County’s own

CHESTER — Chester Courthouse
was the venue for a roundtable on
Tuesday to discuss broadband internet in Appalachia, specifically Meigs
and Vinton Counties.
Meigs Economic Development
hosted Congressman Bill Johnson
(R-Marietta), who led the group
that included State Representative
Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville), Vinton
County Economic Development
representatives, local business owners, and communication providers.
Johnson sits on the Energy and
Commerce Committee, as well as
the Committee on the Budget in the
United States House of Representatives.

By Sarah Hawley

“There are huge broadband issues
in Appalachia,” Johnson said. “There
is a rural and urban divide that continues to grow as a result, and I think
this is a very important topic.”
Johnson stressed that people are
leaving the area, in part due to the
lack of broadband infrastructure,
which is an economic driver that
allows business to communicate. He
went on to say “our nation is suffering as a result of the rural/urban
technology divide that does not allow
participation in the education and
career development in rural areas
that is available in urban settings.”
Connect Ohio Executive Director
Stu Johnson provided the group with

Broadband

Assessment completed
for Meigs and Vinton
counties.
Connect Ohio is a
subsidiary of Connected
Nation, a non-profit group
whose successful effort to
map Kentucky’s internet
infrastructure helped that
state’s efforts to expand
broadband service to
rural or otherwise underserved areas.
The non-profit gathered data for the assessment from residents in
an attempt to identify
obstacles to broadband
expansion and issues with
current infrastructure.
“Data is revealing
to communities,” Stu
Johnson explained. “Our
research provided insight
into the challenges and
needs of communities,
allowing us to develop an
Action Plan and making
funding for the project
easier to obtain.”
The survey found that
80 percent of respondents
with service said the
speed was too slow and
61 percent thought it was
unreliable. Two main barriers to broadband adoption
among various groups
were that it was either not
available or too expensive.
Fifteen townships were
identified as areas with
service gaps, including
Columbia, Salem, Bedford, Lebanon and Letart
Townships in Meigs.
Stu Johnson said “our
assessment revealed
many challenges to reducing the digital divide
across both counties”
such as digital literacy.
“A low broadband
adoption rate (less than
53 percent) and high dissatisfaction with available
service highlight the need
for better broadband solutions,” he said.
The Action Plan
includes the development of public-private
partnerships and a push
for digital equity which is
the promotion of low cost

Congressman Bill Johnson took part in a roundtable discussion on Tuesday morning on broadband service in Meigs and Vinton counties.

broadband service for vulnerable populations.
“It is easier to upgrade
existing broadband connections than to provide
additional coverage for
rural areas. The density
of the population isn’t
going to change soon,
so we need to determine
ways to provide fundamental broadband service
to underserved areas,” he
concluded.
Congressman Johnson
said that Tuesday’s roundtable was the beginning
of the discussion of this
complex issue, and that
with multiple barriers to
access there are no easy
or quick answers.
Several participants,
including the Congressman, stressed the need for
residents to understand
what technology in their
homes can do for them.
Meigs Local Technology
Coordinator Matt Simpson
told the group he has seen
improvement in broadband
availability in the district,
but obstacles for students
still exist at home.
“The adoption rate is
growing,” Simpson said,
and “teachers are encouraging ‘blended learning,’”

strategies, which require
internet access. “Since
not all students have
access (or computers) at
home, it makes it difficult
to implement.”
Vinton Director of
Development Terri Fetherolf also weighed in, and
added that like Meigs,
some parts of Vinton
County are extremely
underserved.
“Why can’t there be a
program similar to the
Rural Electrification Act
that brought electricity
to rural areas,” she said.
“We need help expanding
broadband coverage to
our underserved areas.”
Speaking after the
discussion, Economic
Development Director
Perry Varnadoe said the
positive turnout for the
event showed that Meigs
residents are interested in
the availability of broadband services.
“I was glad to see more
support for providers
to bring affordable, fast
service throughout the
county,” Varnadoe said.
Congressman Johnson
wrapped the discussion
and reiterated that a

Meigs wins opening TVC-Ohio match
Marauders take tiebreaker at Cliffside

Meigs’ Bobby Musser putts on the sixth hole during Tuesday’s Tri-Valley
Conference Ohio Division golf match at Cliffside Golf Club.

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio —Every
single solitary stroke matters.
For the Meigs High School
golf team on Tuesday, that
proved to be a good thing.
That’s because the Marauders — the defending Tri-Valley
Conference Ohio Division
champions — made good on a
tiebreaker in addition to three
other shots, as Meigs escaped
Cliffside Golf Club in Gallipolis

with a razor-thin close win in
the league’s opening match of
2017.
River Valley was the host
school for the opener at Cliffside.
Meigs, which captured last
season’s championship for its
fourth TVC-Ohio title in five
years including three outright,
won the fifth-score tiebreaker
against Vinton County to take
Tuesday’s tilt.
The seven squads, as only
Nelsonville-York with two golf-

ers did not post a team score,
took aim at the par-36 Cliffside
front nine.
The Vikings, which shared
the 2014 crown with Meigs and
won it outright two years back,
stood tied with the Marauders at 187 after all scores were
turned in.
In addition, Athens almost
joined them, as the Bulldogs
shot a team total of 190.

Linebacker Booker
gets another chance
for Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After he injured his
knee in Ohio State’s season opener last year, linebacker Dante Booker was a man in limbo.
Week after week, coach Urban Meyer would tell
reporters that Booker may be close to returning to
the field. Week after week, Booker would sit out,
watching his replacement, Jerome Baker, become
a star in a defense laden with stars. In the end,
the season was a wash, and Booker took a medical
redshirt.
“I felt like I was robbed a little bit,” he acknowledged.
Booker is healthy now, and has earned a starting outside linebacker spot, joining Baker — who
came out of nowhere to finish second on the team
in tackles (83) and tackles for a loss (9.5) — who
will man the other side.
To Booker, who played in nearly every game in
his first two years before earning the starting nod
in last year’s preseason camp, 2017 seems like a
fresh start. He still considers himself a brand-new
starter.
“I feel like I’m more passionate because I don’t
have as many swings left,” he said. “It’s kind of
reignited this fire a little bit inside of me.”
New linebackers coach Bill Davis said Booker
doesn’t need any extra motivation.
“With Dante I don’t think there’s any such word
as extra,” said Davis, an NFL assistant for 24 NFL
seasons. “He is so driven. He wants it to bad. As
long as I’ve known him, he’s that driven. He is fullthrottle and wants it as bad as anyone I’ve been
around.”
Coach Urban Meyer sees it, too.
“He’s doing great,” Meyer said. “He’s one of my
favorite players. He’s just a good guy who works
his tail off. It’s not been easy for him.”
Booker’s resurgence is timely because there
was a huge hole to fill in the Buckeyes’ linebacker
corps. Raekwon McMillan, the leading tackler and
leader of last year’s defense, left a year early for
the NFL. That’s 221 tackles in the past two seasons that now have to be accounted for.
Last year’s strongside backer and fifth-year
senior Chris Worley has moved over to the middle
to replace McMillan, leaving Baker and Booker on
the outsides.
Baker was a present surprise last year, introducing himself to the nation when he grabbed an
interception and ran it back 68 yards for a touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 14-0 lead at Oklahoma in their third game of the season. He also
had a critical interception against Michigan late in
the third quarter with Ohio State down by 10. He
admits, though, that he lined up wrong about half
the time and compensated for it with his speed.
“His football IQ is high to begin with, and I
think it’s growing,” Davis said of Baker, who along
with Worley has been named to the preseason
watch list for the Butkus Award. “When you take
a fast player who is twitched up like he is, and he
sees things clearly and knows he knows, now you
actually increase his speed. So Jerome is getting
faster and faster.”
